Now whatever form of advertising you do to bring in new customers, there is hands down one method that is plainly the least beneficial. That's advertising that practically never gets seen.

Computer systems became a major productivity tool in the 1980's long just before the "Internet" or "World Wide Web" manifested itself during the late 1990's. The internet opened with a flourish that eventually blew up as the dot com bubble. Now not really everything was awful about that particular experience. But essentially the most common results for tens of thousands of small companies was a flock of internet sites that few or no one ever saw. (Except maybe your mama and you when you spent some time to try to find it.)

I've often called these types of small business web sites as electronic brochures as valuable as a "billboard in a pasture that only the cows look at." As of 2010, around half of all small businesses in the US had internet sites for their own businesses, and the other 50% steadfastly refused to take action. It's sad for me personally to say so, but in many respects the people who choose not to play the internet game may have won on their bet.

Whether they paid lots of money to a fancy web designer, or got by on the cheap by hiring the son or nephew the issue was the same. It was one thing to have an online site and another one completely to have one that was basically worth beans from a marketing point of view.

Now there were a lot of things wrong about many of these websites that goes well beyond the purposes of this article. I detailed most of them in an e-book I wrote many years ago called, "Why Most Small Business Web Sites Stink!" But the significant point for our discussion today is that these sites typically were hard to find by customers searching for a provider to meet their needs. For this reason, they were mainly useless, from a strictly marketing perspective.

Now if your potential customer already knew your business name, or the address of your internet site, they could find you. They could perhaps check your hours, telephone number or address, which was not all bad. But if they were actually looking to purchase a left handed pipe wrench that you sold, the odds were not so good. The net result is that many businesses did not draw in lots of new customers because of their internet site. They needed to drive visitors to their internet websites by other forms of advertising before they could provide any real benefit.

I mention all this because, Times Have Changed. Sadly, a lot of local businesses having been once burned and/or disheartened about the value of the web are now slow to pick up on the new facts. The new reality is that small business people need to learn how to get on Google maps.

When people search for a vendor to meet their requirements these days they do it on the internet or on their cellphones. Google will show a map with around seven local companies they think can fill that need. If you want those customers you need to know how to get on Google maps to be seen when people search.

The best part about it is that it's free of charge. The easiest way to learn how to get on Google maps is to perform a search on Google for just that term.
