It seems that all around us things are evolving at an awfully rapid rate. The main contributing factor to all the change appears to be the increase in the number of people that reside in the United States. With the increase in numbers in the population, the metropolitan areas are spreading out farther from the core of the city. As the metro areas grow, more and more of the population expands into the rural areas. Soon development follows the people and rural areas turn in to little towns. Increasingly less land is being used for farming; instead it is being developed in to housing.

A couple of years ago my husband and I noticed that rich individuals were buying up lots on lakes. They would find cottages available along the lakes area and would tear down the cottage and replace it with a massive brand-new structure. We noticed several smaller lakes which we liked fishing on were suddenly surrounded by gigantic homes. One lake in specific we noticed this happening on. The big homes took away the north woods atmosphere from the lake. My husband and I had talked about finding cottages available that we could update and have as a get away. We decided that the way properties were moving we had better make our move for cottages for sale while there were still some available.

You see, years prior we had gone through a similar scenario in the shore city of Santa Barbara. For years, we vacationed there and stayed in Santa Barbara hotels. We saw people renting cottages rather than stay in the somewhat expensive Santa Barbara hotels, and decided to investigate a cottage rental to stay away from paying high rates at these Santa Barbara hotels. Well, seeking to rent a cottage turned in to wanting to buy, however, we waited too long and the market took off, with prices rising outside of our range. We vowed never to make the same mistake again.

We decided one Saturday afternoon to go for a drive around two lakes that we've always enjoyed. One of the lakes is quite large and the other was smaller, but there is a channel which goes from this small lake in to a bigger lake. A good portion of this lake and the surrounding area were in a state park. We had been cross country skiing in the national park during the winter's months and we had noticed that there were numerous privately owned cabins adjacent to the state land. We talked about how private the area was. We went back to the area to see if anything was in the marketplace. We turned down one small road that we had never been on before. The road led to what had once been a little resort. There were signs listing cottages for sale. The resort had been shut for many years. The majority of the buildings were in need of repairs. Two of the cottages on the market had been updated within the past six to seven years. The cottages were close to the shore of the lake and were surrounded by pine trees. It was an awfully pretty setting, but we were worried about who would do the upkeep on the road when it snowed. We are still looking at cottages on the market. I know that it's only a matter of time before we find the perfect place for us.
