A Young Man Requires Treatment For His Intense Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Drug And Alcohol Dependency

Around eight months ago I had dinner with a forty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from intense depression, has relationship issues, and who is dependent on alcohol and drugs. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his drug and alcohol addiction and his intense depression that has had the most to do with his continual relationship difficulties.

As stated by Benjamin, he is so overcome by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical conditions that he in essence has little or no ambition to complete much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish one semester of grad school in entrepreneurship.

Benjamin's condition makes me question if he is an illustration of a person who can look within and perceive his drug addiction and drinking problems and do something meaningful about these problems. Or, conversely, if he is an individual who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation that leads to long lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how rehab would help his drug and alcohol addiction. For starters, there are a number of recently discovered physician-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is completely nothing productive about drug addiction and careless and excessive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the road to deteriorating health, legal problems, shattered relationships, poor work and school performance, a premature death, and financial difficulties. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship issues might help him manage these psychological difficulties more successfully and help create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in rehab he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Since Benjamin lacks the willpower to achieve much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he definitely needs some hope for a more fulfilling existence. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the therapy he requires for his intense depression and drug dependence and alcohol addiction and adhere to his treatment routine.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be dejected in life. He doesn't understand this right now but if he can learn how to refrin from drugs and alcohol through alcohol and drug rehab and get the counseling he requires for his intense depression, he can turn his life around and start living with self-respect, passion, and direction.

More solid relationships, constructive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are clearly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to obtain the medical treatment he requires, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in a dependency-free and healthy manner, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about his existence.
