A Considerate Supervisor Helps A Worker Address His Heavy And Excessive Drinking After A Destroyed Relationship
Barry got suspended from high school when he was sixteen years old and eventually found employment at a local paint manufacturer. For the past nine years he has earned a reputation as a hard-working and conscientious employee who rarely takes off from work due to sickness.
Approximately nine months ago he started dating a young lady named Carol. They seemed to hit it off immediately and gave people the impression that they had a lot of good times together.
When Barry met Carol, he almost never drank. This situation changed when Barry and Carol started seeing each other on a regular basis. In truth, everything was going great until Carol out of the blue called Barry one night roughly 2:30 AM and told him that she had to call off their relationship and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.
The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to Carol's apartment and found out almost immediately that she had already moved out. Barry received this news exceptionally hard. If truth be told, he was astounded because they seemed to be getting along so very well.
So what did Barry do about Carol's departure? Instead of working through his anguish and grief, he began getting inebriated almost every night. It didn't take very long for his coworkers and for his manager to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least three times per week and that he continually called off sick. Furthermore, some of the workers made an appointment with staff in the HR Department and mentioned that Barry continually came to work with a noticeable smell of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.
Barry's supervisor heard about all of this from Barry's co-workers and from Human Resources. So one Tuesday afternoon he called Barry into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed an explicit change in his attendance, sick time, behavior, and in his work performance.
"Barry, I'm not an expert about alcohol facts and I'm not particularly well-educated about alcoholism facts, but I have seen more than a few of my friends and relatives go through some really terrible issues due to their heavy and abusive drinking. My suggestion is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcoholism and alcohol abuse can do to a person."
"Why is this relevant? When people involve themselves in heavy and abusive drinking, their drinking problems not only adversely affect the alcohol abuser, but they also negatively impact her or his family, friends, co-workers, relatives, and neighbors. Barry, in short, I want you to get some help for your irresponsible and abusive drinking from our fine employee's assistance program."
Barry respected his supervisor very much and as a consequence followed through with his suggestion the next morning when he called and scheduled an appointment with a healthcare practitioner in the employee's assistance program. Even though Barry didn't necessarily feel any less depressed or feel better about the pain in his heart about Carol, he felt some comfort knowing that his supervisor and his co-workers cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave Barry some psychological relief for the first time in a number of weeks and he frankly felt some hope that he would get back on track with his life.
